Do you know how sometimes you just see things that really really break your heart and all you can do is cry even though the situation has literally nothing to do with you?
I was at CVS picking up a prescription and there was a very old couple in front of me. Both of their backs were hunched over and they moved very slowly and talked quietly. I heard the pharmacist list off 3 medications they were picking up, and then told them the total cost of all the medicines. They both looked at each other and looked confused. They explained to the pharmacist that they’d been getting these prescriptions for months and it had never cost that much before. The pharmacist told them that there was some kind of change in their government-based medical insurance and they weren’t covered anymore. And then they both started crying. This tiny little woman and this tiny little man, they were heartbroken because they couldn’t afford all of them. Then the husband told the pharmacist to put his medicine back- the only medicine he cared about was his wife’s and he’d go without his for a few weeks.
I just walked out and got into my car at that point. I just couldn’t do it. They looked too much like my great grandparents and I couldn’t do anything to help because I’m too broke. I waited a few minutes and went back inside and didn’t see them anymore. I don’t know what happened to them after that.

Oh my God these kinds of things just kill me. Every time I drive past that ridiculous house being built on Salem Church Road, all I think about is how they could be doing actual good with that money. Helping people. Ugh.
